San Mateo police announced on
Saturday the arrest of two teens that allegedly helped Josue Orozco escape the juvenile
hall. Orozco, 17, was detained as a primary suspect in a 2005 drive-by shooting
in Redwood City and was facing a possible life sentence.
Josue Raul Orozco escaped on
Thursday night and authorities believe he headed for Mexico. The surveillance
cameras last showed him playing basketball with Martin Villa Patino, 18, and
Vanher Cho, 18, both on juvenile hold at the same institution.
The two helped Orozco escape by
pushing him over a 10-foot concrete wall. The suspect then managed to escape
through a hole in the fence, but it still remains unclear who cut the fence
that surrounds the exercise area. Orozco was waiting for his trial and did not
have the right to a bail.
“One minor assisted the other in
climbing up and using a light standard and then climbing over the fence and
down the outside. Apparently it was a preplanned escape as the fence had been
cut from the outside," said Asst. Chief Probation Officer Stewart Peterson,
abc7news.com reports.
What raises the most concerns in
this case is not only that a murder suspect was being held in a juvenile
institution, but the escape came from a $150 million institution, opened in
2006, with 100 surveillance cameras and probation officers monitoring ‘every
move’.
Apparently Orozco’s escape went unnoticed
for several hours, giving him plenty of time to leave the state. The security
cameras captured glimpses of what looked like a getaway car – a black Chevrolet
Impala. Authorities said the suspect injured his leg upon escaping, could be
armed, and is dangerous.
According to the San Mateo
County Sheriffs Department’s spokesman, the public has not been officially
announced of the escape due to the fact that the suspect was believed to have
fled the state after his escape.
