Two Moderate Earthquakes Strike Northern California Coast

The northern parts of the Californian coast were shaken a bit by two moderate earthquakes. The quakes were centered in the ocean and there were no reports of injuries or damages.

The first earthquake struck at 2:27 a.m. Sunday about 41 miles southwest of Eureka and 208 miles northwest of Sacramento. The 11.5 miles-deep tremor measured 5.1 degrees on the Richter scale, but didn’t produce any major damage.

The second earthquake struck one minute later about 40 miles west of Santa Rosa and 74 miles northwest of San Francisco. It was 3 miles deep and had a magnitude of 4.1 degrees on the Richter scale. The measurements and other facts about the pair of earthquakes were provided by the U.S. Geological Survey and the USGS National Earthquake Center.

The earthquakes which measure around 5 degrees on the Richter scale are considered moderate, but are also send as capable of causing serious damage. The 4-degree magnitude earthquakes are considered light and thus expected to inflict less damage and injury.

According to police officials from the towns and cities (Humboldt and Sonoma) struck by the series of earthquakes there were no reports of serious damage or injuries.
