Two Malibu men were charged for attacking a paparazzo who was photographing actor Matthew McConaughey while surfing.
The whole scene happened in June when the two men – 24-year-old Skylar Martin Peak and 30-years-old Philip John Hildebrand – allegedly attacked Richid Altmbareckouhammou, a photographer for a French news agency.
The two aggressors attacked Altmbareckouhammou despite the fact that at that time there were several other paparazzi on the beach snapping photos of McConaughey on the surfing board in the Pacific Ocean. According to the Los Angeles District Attorney's office, the two Malibu men threw the paparazzo’s camera into the water after shoving him. They were both charged with one misdemeanor count of battery and are facing up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.
The two surfers who thought they were doing the actor a favor will by arraigned in October, The Associated Press reported.
The video recording of the incident is available online and in it one can clearly see that several other enthusiasts closed in on the paparazzo.
"I’ll give you a thousand bucks if you leave right now," one of the surfers can be heard saying.
However, only the two surfers mentioned above were charged.
The incident went nationwide and prompted local officials to look for measures that would curb the paparazzi activities in the area. So far, LA Councilman Dennis Zine held a hearing during which some proposed licensing paparazzi and making safety zones for celebs.
McConaughey, was surfing near a cove in Malibu and was not involved in the brawl. The actor is well-known for his roles in "Fool's Gold," "Failure to Launch," and the upcoming "Surfer, Dude,"
