You would think that people like custom officers should be smarter than
taking bribes or helping contraband. Well, think again, because some of them are
not that smart.
In fact, two custom officers from Kennedy Airport
were arrested because they allegedly helped smuggle drugs and took bribes. Did
they really think they could get away with it?
Seriously!
According to Newsday, customs supervisor Walter Golembiowski
was charged with bribery conspiracy and narcotics importation conspiracy and Officer
John Ajello was charged with bribery conspiracy.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration reported that these
two officers made a habit of requesting and taking bribes so that the
contraband could pass without being detected.
In addition to that, other airport workers were charged with
importing counterfeit goods like expensive Rolex, Cartier and Chanel watches,
reported CNN.
Apparently, Golembiowski was caught on camera when he was
taking bribes from people who were trying to bring illegal drugs into the
country. This kind of illegal activity started in 2004.
The investigation was lead by the New York Organized Crime
Drug Enforcement Strike Force, which includes local police, FBI, DEA, Homeland
Security and other federal units. The investigation has been going on for 5
years and, during this time, authorities have arrested about 20 people. They
also halted about 600 pounds of imported hashish worth about $500,000 to get
into the country.
