The search for the two suspects who stole a car in Belle Glade and caused a chase that led to the death of two deputies and to the wounding of another was intensified, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said.
The severe wounded deputy was immediately taken by air to the St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach where he was put under intensive care.
It all started when the local police station received a call at about 1 a.m. from a woman who reported that his neighbor’s 1990 gold Toyota Camry was being broken into by two men. The investigation began and the stolen car was spotted traveling northbound on Route 715. The pursuit was authorized by the sheriff’s sergeant and three marked sheriff's patrol cars followed the Toyota.
Tire deflation devices were deployed in front of the stolen vehicle on Route 715. This led to an incident that is still under investigation. Two deputies who deployed the above mentioned devices and were on the ground were struck and killed and another deputy, who was following the Toyota in a police car, was severely injured.
Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said in an interview for the WPTV-Ch. 5 that it is still unknown whether the two deputies, who stood on foot at the scene, were struck by the Toyota or by the patrol cars following it.
After their care came to a halt, the two suspects left the car and ran into a nearby sugar-cane field.
The names of the deputies killed in the accident will be released after their families will be notified.
