Alan Scherr and his 13-year-old daughter, Naomi, were killed in the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, according to the website of Synchronicity Foundation in Virginia. They were in India as part of a meditation program, the organization that ran the program said.
"It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of two of our loved community members Alan and Naomi Scherr who were tragically killed in the recent events in Mumbai," the Foundation said on its website.
The statement gave no detail about the circumstances of their death, but said Scherr and his family had been involved in the Synchronicity community in Faber, Virginia for more than a decade. The group was hosting a meditation program at the Oberoi Hotel, one of the luxury hotels targeted by the Muslim militants. The terrorists simultaneously attacked several hotels, restaurants, a train station and tourist sites in Mumbai. The attacks that included shootings and explosions began Wednesday night.
Four other members of the meditation group, including a Nashville yoga teacher and another Tennessee woman, were shot. The woman from Nashville called her mother from a hospital yesterday and said she had been shot while eating dinner at the Taj Mahal hotel. They are recovering from gunshot wounds in a hospital in Mumbai.
Indian officials have said terrorist attacks have left 120 people dead and more then 300 injured.
The U.S. State Department has not yet confirmed any deaths of Americans victims. The State Department is urging Americans not to travel to Mumbai, especially through the weekend.
