According to several media reports, the malware virus worm called Conficker has worked its way into Twitter and is infecting unsuspecting users of the very popular Web site.
The source of the virus is most likely StalkDaily, com, a Web site to which users received links. Twitter warned users about this site and strongly advised its users not to access the links to it.
"If you have been locked out of your acct due to the StalkDaily issue, pls do a p/w reset; we may have reset your p/w for safety," the popular Web site wrote to its users on Saturday afternoon. Twitter also mentioned that the Conficker worm probably hit the micro-blogging Web site on Saturday morning and then had a resurgence in the afternoon.
However, user can also get infected with the virus by visiting the profile pages of already-infected users, according to TechCrunch. Also, once it infected a Twitter profile, the worm sends tweets with links to the aforementioned Web site to other users.
According to some media reports, the virus can infect your account even if you do not click on the infected tweets and even if you sing off from your account (as a just did).
According to Neoseeker.com, both Twitter and StalkDaily offered advice to users who have been infected:
- Enter the settings of your Web browser and clear your cache and empty all of your cookies.
- Log out of TweetDeck and any external applications you are using.
- On Twitter.com, change your password and ensure that your profile, website, and location have not been changed.
- Log back in. It should be okay. If so, log back into TweetDeck et al.
- Go back and delete any tweets sent by you recommending StalkDaily. This is important to help stop the spread of the worm.
- Report @stalkdaily in a tweet to Twitter’s @spam account as follows: @spam @stalkdaily
