After a good opening day on Friday, “Twilight” has meet the
expectations and earned the first place in this weekend box office with $70,5
million in ticket sales.
“Twilight” focuses on the romance between Bella Swan
(Kristen Stewart), who has just moved to Forks, Washington, so as to live with
her divorced dad, and her classmate, Edward Cullen (the adorable Robert
Pattinson), who proves to be an 108-year-old vampire.
In spite of the fact that one would easily take him for a
teenager, the odd character is member of a “vegetarian” vampire family, who
avoids blood sucking humans and has turned to animals instead. Edward’s
eeriness is so attractive, that Bella immediately falls in love with him and
they begin a forbidden relationship, which is menaced by both other vampires
and by Edward’s own wild instincts that cannot be suppressed effortlessly.
“Twilight” easily follows in the footsteps of the “Harry
Potter” franchise, since it has one of the fiercest fan bases out there and has
stirred an incredible craze among adolescents, especially young girls. Just a
few more books and films to go and magicians will certainly face tough
competition from vampires.
Bond’s latest adventure, “Quantum Of Solace” was knocked up
to the second place and earned only $27,400,000 in the past three days.
“Bolt”, another weekend premiere has earned $27,000,000,
lower than expected. “Bolt” is the first animated film by the Walt Disney
Company that was made in collaboration with Pixar’s creative mastermind John
Lasseter, who helped the kid flick become a magnum opus of its own.
The fourth place went to another animation movie, “Madagascar:
Escape 2 Africa”, that slipped from the second place, with only $16,000,000 in
ticket sales. “Role Models” rounded up the Top 5, with $7,229,000 in ticket
sales.
Overall, the top 12 films grossed $137.6 million, up 16%
over the same weekend a year ago, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media
by Numbers.
"This is another example of how the economy has not
slowed people at all from going to watch movies," he said. "We're set
up to have one of the biggest Thanksgiving weekends ever."
