An event featuring “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson got out
of hand quickly and badly in San Francisco
Monday, with several of the enthusiastic fans being injured in the chaos.
Robert Pattinson had been scheduled to attend an autograph
session at the Hot Topic store in the Stonestown Galleria mall, where fans were
told they had a chance to purchase a “Twilight” tour t-shirt if they managed to
be among the first 500 to line up for the event as well as a chance to meet the
22-year-old British actor.
Some 3,000 fans turned up at the mall and things got out of
hand. According to comments posted on the Twilight Lexicon Blog, there were too
many fans eager and shoving and pushing to get a good place and only one security
guard to strive and keep some kind of order.
It all eventually became chaotic though and some of the
girls there were hurt, with one girl breaking her nose in the mash. One user
identifying as Returned Secrets wrote on the blog, “All those who pushed,
shoved and disobeyed should be ashamed of themselves,” adding it was
unfortunate events like this which created such a bad reputation for “Twilight”
fans as “uncontrollable screaming girls.”
Police ultimately had to intervene, cancelling the autograph
session.
Robert Pattinson portrays Edward Cullen in the film, a
vampire who falls in love with a human girl. The actor has also played Cedric
Diggory in the Harry Potter movies. Kristen Stewart co-stars as his human love
interest Bella Swan in “Twilight.” Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (“Thirteen,”
“The Nativity Story”) and based on the Stephenie Meyer young-adult novel of the
same name, it is scheduled for release on Nov. 21.
