One of the rather anticipated comedies of the summer, 'Tropic Thunder,' opens next week. While it has all the chances of being really funny and enjoyable, there are a few issues that might make the audience come in fewer numbers that the film's producers hoped.
One of the things that might taint the release of 'Tropic Thunder' are the complaints that were voiced by disability advocacy groups. What they didn't like about the movie was the fact that the developmentally disabled character played by Ben Stiller is often times called “retard.” The advocacy groups considered that the term is much too violent and that the people who will watch the movie might feel offended about it.
As a result, the producers of the comedy said that they will change some of the ads that are part of the promotional campaign of 'Tropic Thunder.'
The other issue is the fact that Tom Cruise was cast in the movie. While critics have acclaimed the actor's performance, his shabby public image might cause the film to lose some of its viewers. This was the case with 'Mission Impossible 3,' which made less money that its predecessor, a thing that was partly attributed to the scandals that Cruise was involved in at that time.
On the other hand, the actor has changed his behavior lately, but whether this was enough to determine people to come watch him again or not, remains to be seen.
However, people should not be let down by all these. The comedy is one that deserves being watched. Maybe it's not as funny as 'Pineapple Express,' but it will certainly make you laugh, and, after all, this is what a comedy is all about.
