The person who organized the hotel room meeting that led to
robbery charges against O.J. Simpson approximately a year ago, gave his
testimony on Friday, after the jury returned from an unexpected field trip to
the scene of the much talked about confrontation.
Thomas Riccio, a collectibles dealer, told jurors that the
former football star only wanted to take back his personal effects.
Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass had planned the
jury trip late on Thursday, after concluding that a plywood and pressboard
mock-up of the 322-square-foot hotel room was not appropriate, court spokesman
Michael Sommermeyer said, as cited by The Associated Press.
O.J. Simpson and co-defendant Clarence “C.J.” Stewart
pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges, including armed robbery, kidnapping and
conspiracy for the role they played in the September 2007 incident. O.J.
Simpson claims that he was only trying to recuperate his belongings in the
confrontation with memorabilia dealers Bruce Fromong and Alfred Beardsley.
In addition to this, the prosecutors played a secretely
recorded tape of the quarrel in which The Juice and a group of men can be heard
breaking into the hotel room and threatening to hurt the dealers if they did
not cooperate. The supposed victims are subsequently heard, following the
Simpson group’s departure, phoning police and hotel security to complain about
the alleged robbery.
The jury trip to the scene of the confrontation was made
public only after it took place. The tour was “very low key and
well-coordinated,” said Lori Nelson, spokeswoman for Palace Station owner
Station Casinos Inc., the AP reported.
The Simpson trial seems to have been very demanding both
inside and outside the courtroom. Even before the trial kicked off, all eyes
were on the jurors, as a jury selection had been thoroughly made. Presently,
jurors go on trips and listen to incriminating recordings. What will they do
next?
