According to estimates issued on Sunday, Nicholas Cage's "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" has led the box office for the third weekend in a row with around $20 million. Will Smith's sci-fi flick for Warner Bros., "I Am Legend," was second with around $16.5 million and teen-pregnancy comedy "Juno" came in third with about $16 million.
Disney's sequel to "National Treasure" was directed by Jon Turteltaub and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Released Friday, Dec. 21, the film raised its domestic total to $171 million in three weeks, just $2 million short of the total that 2004's "National Treasure" rang up during its entire run.
Nicolas Cage resumed his role as adventurous Benjamin Franklin Gates, treasure hunter and, apparently inevitable in the process of pursuing artifacts, detective. The cast also included Diane Kruger, Jon Voight and Justin Bartha, who co-starred in "National Treasure," as well as Harvey Keitel and Helen Mirren. Despite such a stellar cast, the film was poorly reviewed by critics. This did not discourage moviegoers from crowding theaters.
The movie is set to have its European release in February, and it is expected to have an equally big success. For the time being, "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" sits comfortably in the spotlight for the third week in a row.
"Juno," which will compete for six prizes on Monday at the Critics Choice Awards, expanded to 1,952 theaters in its fifth frame for a grand total of $52 million, putting it on track to become one of the highest grossing specialty titles ever released. The flick follows a bored Mid-Western highschooler, Juno (played by Ellen Page), who has casual sex with friend from her school's track team and gets pregnant.
