Ex Blink-182 member Travis Barker and DJ AM were still in
critical condition on Sunday after the Learjet they were on crashed and burst
into flames on a runway in South California.
The crash, which took place just after midnight on Friday in
Columbia, S.C.,
claimed four deaths. The plane’s two pilots, Sarah Lemmon, 3l, and James Bland,
52, were among the victims.
However, the two musicians seem to be very lucky, as their
physicians said that the former pop-punk band’s drummer and disc jockey Adam
Goldstein were expected to fully recover from the second- and third-degree
burns they suffered in the accident.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Debbie Hersman,
spokeswoman and board member of the National Transportation Safety Board,
explained that investigators had recovered the plane’s voice recorder in an
attempt to analyze the significant pieces of conversation between the Learjet’s
pilots.
“The crew reacted to a sound consistent with a tire
blowout,” Hersman said, as reported by the same source. “The crew attempted to
reject the takeoff, but they were unable to stop the aircraft before it
departed the runway.”
The cockpit was taking off from Columbia
Metropolitan Airport
when it crashed and, apart from the pilots, two other passengers were killed in
the unfortunate incident: Chris Baker, 29, of Studio
City and Charles Still, 25, of Los Angeles, both members
of Travis Barker’s entourage.
Family members for the artists released a common statement
saying: “Both Travis Barker and Adam Goldstein (DJ AM) are currently being
treated for second- and third-degree burns. Barker suffered from burns on his
torso and lower body and Goldstein suffered from burns on his arm and a portion
of his head.” Furthermore, the statement added that a full recovery was
expected.
