Travis Barker, the former drummer for Blink 182, has sued companies
linked to the September plane crash in North
Carolina which only he and fellow traveler DJ Adam Goldstein
survived.
Travis Barker and celebrity DJ Adam Goldstein were the sole
survivors of a Sept. 19 plane crash in South
Carolina that killed the two pilots, Barker’s
assistant, Chris Baker and his bodyguard, Charles Monroe Still Jr.
Barker and Goldstein were both injured, suffering severe
burns. They were hospitalized at the Joseph M. Still
Burn Center at Doctors’ Hospital in Augusta, Georgia,
where they received treatment for second and third degree burns.
Travis Barker filed a lawsuit Friday against the plane’s
owners, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., and an airplane maintenance company,
seeking more than $25,000 in damages.
Barker, 33, is seeking damages for pain and suffering,
disfigurement, loss of earnings, and medical and legal expenses. The mother of
his deceased bodyguard joined Barker in the lawsuit, seeking damages for grief
and sorrow, funeral expenses and loss of earnings.
The former Blink 182 drummer claims in the court documents the
accident occurred because the companies operated and maintained the Learjet in
question improperly. Companies sued are owner Global Exec Aviation, a Long
Beach, Calif.-based charter company, Goodyear; Toronto-based Bombardier Inc.,
which the suit claims was responsible for maintaining the aircraft; and two
charter firms that brokered the flight, Clay Lacy Aviation Inc. and Inter
Travel and Services Inc.
The lawsuit also claims the two pilots, who did not survive,
were inadequately trained.
The National Transportation Safety Board is currently
investigating the accident. Authorities have said the jet’s crew thought a tire
blew during takeoff, according to cockpit recordings. Goodyear spokesman Ed
Markey said it was “unfortunate” Barker did not wait for the NTSB’s conclusions
before filing a lawsuit.
