A terrible accident happened today in eastern China, where a high-speed train went off its track and collided with another train. At least 66 people were killed and hundreds more were injured. Terrorism was ruled out as an explanation for the incident.
The train, traveling from Beijing to the coastal city of Qingdao, derailed because of what the authorities called a human error, and hit another passenger train traveling from Yantai to Xuzhou. The accident happened at around 4:40 a.m. in the town of Zebo, Shandong Province.
According to the Associated Press, measures were immediately taken in order to assist anyone in need. Nine hotels and 34 rescue centers were prepared to take in the families of the victims and also all people involved in the rescue mission. Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang and Railways Minister Liu Zhijun were immediately taken to the site so they would oversee and help with the rescue efforts. The Zebo hospital officials announced that close to 100 ambulances were present to transport the passengers.
Out of the injured passengers, 70 are in need of serious medical attention.
Another collision happened last September on the same train line but the incident ended without any deaths.
The last major train accident in China happened in 1997, when other two trains collided. The crash killed 126 people and injured over 200 others.
China has a very complex and heavily used rail system. It is the country’s most popular way of traveling, with last year’s numbers well over 1 billion passengers.
