Toyota has recently unveiled some technical details about the new generation hybrid car Prius, which gets 50 miles per gallon, beating the current Prius and its 46 mpg combined rating. It looks like the new generation car is more efficient than ever due to a more efficient engine and smaller, lighter components.

The car has a solar-moonroof, with solar cells used for generating power. Furthermore, the Prius will have a solar-powered ventilation system. Drivers can now change chassis settings for sport driving or optimum efficiency. The interior has gone through a complete redesign, with more legroom and cargo space. The new Prius is set to be released this spring, with a $22,000 price tag.

The company said that its production cuts announced so far would bring its U.S. inventory of unsold cars and trucks in line with demand by May. However, more reductions may be needed if demand falls further. Toyota's sales fell 15 percent last year in the US, announced in December that it was going to cut North American production of its best-selling cars, including the Camry and Corolla sedans.

Furthermore, Toyota also suspended work on its new plant in Mississippi, which was slated to produce the Prius from 2010. Unfortunately, Toyota's unsold stock of vehicles has doubled from 45 days a year ago to near 90 days for some vehicles, before production was scaled back. However, the construction of the factory in Mississippi will be completed, but the facility will not be equipped for production.

Recent indications show that US auto sales in the first quarter of 2009 will be similar to the fourth quarter of 2008.
