White House Press Secretary Tony Snow intends to leave his office by the end of 2007, according to the latest media reports.
The spokesman reportedly said that the main reason for his resignation is a financial one, Snow being unsatisfied with his current remuneration. He didn’t confirm his intentions, but during a radio interview he expressed his discontent regarding the pay cut suffered after leaving Fox News.
“I'm not going to be able to go the distance, but that's primarily for financial reasons." Snow said during his discussion with talk-show host Hugh Hewitt.
“I've told people when my money runs out, then I've got to go.”
The precise date of his departure isn’t known yet, but it is clear that he will leave office before President George W Bush end his term in January 2009. During his interview, Snow didn’t mention his illness as a motive for a possible resignation.
In 2005, he was diagnosed with colon cancer and for six months he fought the disease and with the help of chemotherapy he apparently won the battle. But earlier this year, doctors discovered that Snow’s liver was affected and resumed treatment.
If he decides to step down, Snow would be another prominent official to leave the Bush administration before 2009, after Karl Rove and leading Republican Dennis Hastert announced their exit.
Bush’s longtime political advisor Rove said he will leave the White House after this month and return to Texas. He joined Bush’s team in 1993 and is believed to have masterminded the president's election campaigns.
