White House Press Secretary Tony Snow is expected to hand in his resignation on Friday after more than two years of service, media reports informed.
Snow has been battling colon cancer over the past period, but he said financial reasons may determine him to step down before the end of President Bush’s second term in January 2009.
He isn’t satisfied with the salary received as press secretary that reportedly swivels around 170,000 dollars, because it’s smaller than the one paid by Fox News during his period as journalist. Earlier this months he expressed his discontent during a popular talk show hosted by Hugh Hewitt.
“I'm not going to be able to go the distance, but that's primarily for financial reasons,” Snow said during his discussion with the host. “I've told people when my money runs out, then I've got to go.”
Snow didn’t bring up his illness when speaking about a potential resignation. He fought with the merciless disease for six months and with the help of chemotherapy managed to win a battle. But the war continued as he announced earlier this year that the cancer spread to his liver.
Snow, 52, is the latest official to leave Bush’s administration after the president’s close political advisor Karl Rove and the Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. The alleged mastermind behind Bush’s election campaigns, Rove said he will leave the White House and return to Texas after August 31, while Gonzales said he will leave office on September 17.
Both have been involved in scandals that involved corruption and other hard accusations, receiving criticism from numerous politicians.
As for Snow, he would certainly be replaced by the current Deputy White House Press Secretary and director of communications Dana Perino after he steps down on September 14.
