There has been much talk about Barack Obama’s decision to buy a half an hour in primetime television. He is not the first to use television as a campaigning tool, but he is still one of the few.

So far, analysts think there could be two possible outcomes: on the one hand, he could reach more people via TV and convince them that they should vote for him or, on the other hand, he could aggravate viewers because of his decision to buy air-time in such troubled economic times, as opposed to McCain, who suspended his campaign because of the economic crisis. The latter is quite debatable, but most Republicans are sure to use this argument.

So what is Obama going to do tonight? Considering the rumors and the official statements, it appears that the Senator will use this time as a closing argument, much like attorneys do before the jury starts deliberating. It seems that he will look directly into the camera and speak about the everyday troubles of Americans. Perhaps because many people had doubts about what exactly will happen during that half hour, the Senator agreed that he and his campaigning officers will offer a one minute trailer to the New York Times.

The trailer shows Obama speaking to white workers in a suburban home, speaking from the official desk and it seems that the video also presents the stories of four Americans and their families, people met by Obama and his wife during the campaign.

The networks that will broadcast the video are NBC, CBS, Fox, Univision, MSNBC, BET and TV One – the latter two cater especially to African-Americans. The ironic part is that although Barack Obama seemed to be the “big spender” of the campaign, John McCain has spent much more money and has had a notably weaker campaign.
