On December
25, a new World War II thriller
called „Valkyrie” is scheduled to debut in United
States theaters, starring Tom Cruise as would-be
Hitler assassin Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg.
The production depicts the German resistance to Adolf
Hitler, portrayed by actor David Bimber, telling the story of a plot aimed at
assassinating him during World War II, which is based on actual events.
Since Tom Cruise has been striving for a while to restore
his reputation back to its rights, a movie in which he plays an army
uniform-wearing German is likely to further hinder his efforts to rehabilitate
his image.
Nevertheless, the subject of the production, a sensitive
issue that could never be downplayed, along with the gravity of the matter
might come to serve the actor and help him regain the critical acclaim he has
been craving for some time.
The downwards slope of bad publicity targeting Tom Cruise
has its basis in a 2005 appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show, when he spent
almost the entire interview jumping up and down the guest couch proclaiming his
love for now-wife Katie Holmes.
After that, there was a peculiar interview with „Today”show
host Matt Lauer, while one year later, Paramount Pictures bowed out of a 14
years long collaboration with the actor.
Still, things seem to be on right track in terms
of Cruise
making amends for the aforementioned incidents, since he has yet again
appeared on Oprah’s show, he has publicly set the record straight with
Lauer on Monday
and also launched his own website.
Moreover, he has earned a Golden Globe Awards nomination for
his performance in Ben Stiller’s comedy „Tropic Thunder.”
