"Today" Show coanchor Matt Lauer had never been to a roast before, but the Friars Club annual celebrity roast in New York City was a good place to start. He had the chance to talk to Tom Cruise after their famous discussion about psychiatry and anti-depressants on the "Today" show in 2005.
"People know that Matt and I had "that little thing" a few years ago," the actor said, insisting that they were actually close friends. Cruise said he’s the one person who knows where Lauer is when he goes to his annual "Where is the world is Matt Lauer?" trip. Cruise joined Katie Couric, Meredith Vieira, Brian Williams, Martha Stewart, NBC Universal president and CEO Jeff Zucker, among others, and Aretha Franklin, who sang the national anthem, at the annually charity event.
Cruise also claimed Lauer advised him not to talk about his movie War of the Worlds when he appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s show, 3 years ago, when he got a bit carried away and jumped on the couch. It was the "Today" coanchor who told him to talk about his relationship with Katie Holmes. "Tom, don't be glib....It's inspiring....Your love is inspiring, go crazy, people will love you for it," the Mission Impossible star said this was Lauer’s argument.
As the laughing audience became more interested in this subject, Cruise presented a slideshow of Photoshopped pictures of the two of them at a backyard barbecue together, wading in a swimming pool and cuddling on a jet-ski. It was the right moment for Tom to confess that they go on vacation together and they speak on the phone "sometimes four times a day" and watch TV together.
"Lose my number, you glib putz," Cruise jokingly ended his monologue. When he wanted to leave, Lauer shouted after him, "Tom, can you stay? We can get [you] a booster seat."
