Thursday
night, actress Katie Holmes made her first Broadway appearance in Arthur Miller’s
“All My Sons” at New York's
Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. Hubby Tom Cruise, who was in the audience, expressed
his appreciation of his wife’s performance in the show that is scheduled to officially
open on October 16, by stating for People Magazine that he was extremely proud of
Katie.
The play, which originally opened on Broadway at the Coronet
Theatre in New York City on January 29, 1947, also features Broadway household
names John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest and Patrick Wilson. The same year (1947), „All My
Sons” was awarded a Tony for Best Play.
Arthur Miller’s play is based on a true story that appeared in
an Ohio newspaper, describing how a woman informed on her father who had sold damaged airplane cylinder heads to the United States military during World War II, thus causing the
death of 21 men. Joe Keller, the main
character, blames the shipping of the faulty parts on his business partner, and, prior to
his suicide, he justifies his actions by saying he was trying to protect his
family.
Katie Holmes, 29, portrays Ann Deever, a young woman
involved in an amorous relationship with Chris, one of Joe Keller’s two sons.
Chris’s brother, Larry, has been Missing In Action for three years the time the
play’s action begins to unfurl.
Cruise’s „Rain Man” costar Dustin Hoffman was also in the
audience during the show’s first preview, reckoning that former „Dawson's Creek”
star Katie Holmes, who rose to fame due to her role in the aforementioned TV
series, had done a good job throughout the two-and-a-half-hour play.
