Sunday, NBC announced that, during the election, the new “Meet the Press” moderator will be Tom Brokaw from “NBC Nightly News. He anchored the news for 22 years and left four years ago. Now he remains a special correspondent for the news.
According to The New York Times, NBC said that Brokaw would, temporarily, take Tim Russert’s place and he would host the show through this year’s presidential election. As Russert died on June 13, NBC had to move quickly and choose a new moderator. The best choice was Brokaw who hosted a tribute to Russert, last Sunday.
Brokaw said he felt very comfortable with his new role and expressed his appreciation and admiration for Russert. He also said he was going to do his best to bring the same value to “Meet the Press.”
“Tim made “Meet the Press” the center of the universe for informative and lively discussions of public affairs, particularly the exciting 2008 campaign for president, and I intend to continue that commitment to our viewers,” said Brokaw, according to The New York Times.
Brokaw wasn’t the only candidate on NBC’s mind. David Gregory, Andrea Mitchell and the MSNBC host Chris Matthews were also mentioned. But Brokaw was very active in the media. He produced and also hosted some “Tom Brokaw Reports” for the Peacock.
After the tribute to Russert, Brokaw was replaced, for a week, by Brian Williams, but he will return this Sunday. “Meet the Press” will be broadcast from NBC’s News’ Washington, D.C., bureau.
