NBC News has made a great choice in picking legendary anchor Tom Brokaw to host Meet the Press after Russert's seat was vacated by his untimely death. After all, Brokaw, 68, is the only host in the network's history to have moderated all three major NBC news programs: The Today Show in the 70's, NBC Nightly News in the 80's and 90's and the Russert-tribute Meet the Press last Sunday.
This Sunday, the show was hosted by the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News, Brian Williams. He was the host of Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, and Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., Democrat of Delaware. They were scheduled for Russert's Meet the Press last Sunday, but after his death the show was dedicated to his memory.
Now the network announced that Brokaw is going to serve as permanent replacement for Tim Russert on Meet the Press. Russert suffered a heart attack on Friday, while at work in the NBC Studios in Washington, D.C. He was unable to recover despite resuscitation efforts.
Russert managed through his utmost professionalism to make Meet the Press the longest-running program in TV history. The show was also very profitable for the network, bringing in some $60 million in ad revenue for NBC. This is why NBC chose Brokaw, which is a show host as experienced as they get. He is married and has three children.
Most rumors allege that NBC News reporters David Gregory and Andrea Mitchell are considered to replace Russert on Meet the Press, along with "Hardball" host Chris Matthews, but the network said no permanent replacement was found yet.
