Tom Cruise has earned a Golden Globe nomination for his funny performance as a seedy producer in Ben Stiller’s “Tropic Thunder” but the actor’s missus will not be on his arm at the awards ceremony.
Following a couple of years of unflattering portrayals in the media and of poorly performing films at the box office, Tom Cruise’s time to shine once more has come. His surprising turn as an obese, hirsute and foul-mouthed movie producer in Ben Stiller’s directorial debut earned the 46-year-old actor kudos from film critics and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Wife Katie Holmes will not attend the awards ceremony to cheer her husband on as she has her last performance on Broadway that particular night, on January 11. The actress, who celebrated her 30th birthday this week, made her theater debut this year in the revival of Arthur Miller’s Tony Award winning play “All My Sons.”
Holmes’ rep has announced that the actress wishes to perform on the last show, as the cast and crew have become very close over these past months, almost like a family. She joined a stellar cast: multiple Emmy Award and Tony Award winner John Lithgow, two-time Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest and the younger Tony-, Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated Patrick Wilson.
In the current stage production, directed by Simon McBurney, Holmes portrays Ann, a young woman whose fiancé has died in the war (the play is set during World War II). She visits his parents (portrayed by Lithgow and Wiest) whose surviving son (Wilson) has fallen in love with Ann.
Tom Cruise will be competing with co-star Robert Downey, Jr., Ralph Fiennes (“The Duchess”), Philip Seymour Hoffman (“Doubt”) and Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight”) for the trophy.
