Tobey Maguire is teaming up with Neal Moritz for a comic book adaptation titled “Afterburn,” trade paper Variety reports.
Tobey Maguire is attached to produce the post-Apocalyptic project together with Neal Moritz and his Original Films company, who previously produced the “Fast and Furious” films.
The project is based on the Red 5 comic written by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood, founders of Red 5 Comics. “Afterburn” is drawn by Wayne Nichols. The first issue of the comic book hit stands in January. There is no writer attached for the adaptation yet.
The story begins one year after a solar flare has burned half of the planet and centers on a group of treasure hunters who dare to go back to the scorched portion to retrieve valuable artifacts, cultural icons such as the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone and England’s Crown Jewels, explains the Hollywood Reporter.
They also face danger from rival treasure hunters, mutants and pirates.
Moritz has previously produced, besides the three “Fast and Furious” films and a future untitled sequel, films such as “Stealth,” “Click,” “I Am Legend” and “Vantage Point.”
Maguire just wrapped a role in “Brothers,” a Relativity project. Relativity is also in talks to board “Afterburn.” The Jim Sheridan-directed “Brothers” co-stars Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal and is based on Susanne Bier’s 2004 film of the same name. The story centers on a young man who comforts his older brother’s wife and children after he goes missing in Afghanistan.
Maguire next appears on the big screen in a “Tropic Thunder” cameo. “Tropic Thunder,” written and directed by Ben Stiller, has an August 15 release date. Maguire’s production company is also working on an adaptation of Japanese anime “Robotech” for Warner Bros, along with “Tokyo Suckerpunch” for Sony.
