The name of “Saturday Night Live” star Tina Fey will forever
be associated with the 2008 presidential election due to her hilarious
portrayal of Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin on the NBC show.
While there may be more humor to be freshly squeezed out of this
particular public figure, the former head writer of the sketch comedy show will
apparently keep true to her promise of hanging the Palin wig once the election
was over.
Fey told Entertainment Weekly that she was done for good
with her very successful impersonation of the Alaska governor – such has been her appeal
that SNL enjoyed a 70 percent rise in viewership this memorable season. Fey
said she had to “retire” the spoof because she had to focus on her day job,
meaning solo project “30 Rock,” which she created for NBC and which she stars
in. The series also experienced a significant hike in ratings for its Oct. 30
premiere.
Fey also suggested SNL cast member Kristen Wiig could take
over her impersonation of Sarah Palin, with some kind of passing of the wig, if
not the torch, between the two comediennes.
Fey’s guest appearances on SNL this season, parodying Palin,
have made for some of the series’ highest rating episodes in its recent
history. Palin herself eventually appeared on the show and she and Fey, who was
busy mocking her live, ever so gently crossed paths. That particular Oct. 21
episode drew some 14 million viewers in front of their TV sets, making it the
show’s best ratings in 14 years.
Fey had previously said she was not prepared for four years
of Palin mockery, should the Republicans win the Nov. 4 election. In fact, she
would rather leave Earth, the Emmy Award winning actress had said.
We’re glad to still have you among us Earthlings, Tina Fey.
