Long time writer and cast member Tina Fey is ‘likely’ to return to Saturday Night Live in the role Alaskan governor and Sen. John McCain's running mate Sarah Palin, according to an insider of the comedy show, quoted by several media reports.
Tina Fey was a writer and producer on the SNL show for more than 9 years, including a short period in which she was head writer. She left the show in 2006 to write and star in her own comedy show “30 Rock”, which was produce by SNL executive producer and creator Lorne Michaels.
The show’s new series, which is ready to start this Saturday, hosted by Olympian gold medalist Michael Phelps, was supposed to feature an appearance by Barack Obama, but as he cancelled earlier on Saturday, producer Lorne Michaels called Fey to invite her back to the show in the role of Sarah Palin. Sources say that she has agreed, given that she has time to finish taping for her show "30 Rock".
Fey’s long term appearance in the role seems unlikely, although ever since the Alaskan governor was chosen as McCain’s running mate, most of America associated Fey with the part due to their very similar looks. "The whole world cast her in that role," said Lorne Michaels for the Associated Press.
Alaska governor Sarah Palin has generated strong reactions ever since she started running for vice-presidency, undoubtedly in part because she might be the first woman to fill this office, but also because of her unique personality. Many celebrities such as Matt Damon, Gina Gershon, Pamela Anderson and Pink have had something to say about her candidacy. It certainly seems that all eyes will be on Fey should she choose to accept the role, and considering her track record of funniness, it should be a laugh for everyone.
The main characters of the show will be Hammond and Fred Armisen, which are the cast members interpreting the candidates.
These two mimic maestros will study every gesture of Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain during their election battle and the campaign trail. Their moves and gestures will be then copied by the two comedians during the great show on Saturday.
