If you were feeling safe behind your shower curtain, now it
is time to drop that feeling, as a new report from the Center for Health,
Environment and Justice, released on June 12, found that polyvinyl chloride
(PVC) shower curtains shed 108 poisonous chemicals into the air after being
unpacked.
More exactly, PVC shower curtains can release chemicals for
at least 28 days after being unwrapped.
Stephen Lester, the center’s science director and a
co-author of the report said seven of these chemicals, namely toluene,
ethylbenzene, phenol, xylene, methyl isobutyl ketone, cumene and acetophenone
qualify as hazardous air pollutants, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The report associates these chemicals with a variety of
serious adverse health effects to the lungs, central nervous system, liver and
kidneys. In fact, consumers usually complain of strong chemical smells that
permeate the bathroom, causing nausea and headaches.
For the report, five house-brand curtains and liners were
analyzed, including those sold by Wal-Mart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target,
K-Mart and Sears.
The Virginia-
based organization urged people to end purchasing such curtains, which endanger
their lives and turn to curtains made of plastic, cotton and hemp. Cotton and
hemp shower curtains are easy to clean as they can be washed with laundry as
needed.
The findings were qualified as “phantasmagorical” and
“ridiculous” by the spokeswoman for the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Julie
Valesse, the New York Daily News reports. “There is no justification whatsoever
for the agency to take any kind of action,” she added.
The agency was previously asked by the Centers for Health,
Environment and Justice to ban PVC shower curtains. Major retailers were also
asked to phase them out of stores and to inform customers there are healthier
alternatives.
