World famous professional golfer Tiger Woods became a dad for the first time as he and wife Elin Nordegren welcomed a baby girl.

Less than 24 hours after Tiger Woods played at the US Open on Father’s Day and finished second, the pro golfer welcomed baby girl Sam Alexis Woods. Woods wrote a message on his website Tuesday, ensuring fans mother and daughter were fine.

“Both Elin and Sam are doing well and resting peacefully,” he wrote. “We want to thank our doctors and the hospital staff for all their dedicated and hard work. This is truly a special time in our lives and we look forward to introducing Sam to our family and friends over the next few weeks.

“We thank everyone for their well wishes and continued respect of our privacy,” the golfer added.

Eldrick “Tiger” Woods and Swedish model Elin Nordegren married in 2004. Woods announced his wife was pregnant in December 2006, adding that the baby was due in July.

Monday Woods tied for second with Jim Furyk at the US Open in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, prompting comments that he was tired.

It is not clear how the birth of Sam will affect his upcoming tournament schedule. Woods is scheduled to host a tournament in Washington from July 5-8. The British Open starts July 19.
