DIRECTV Inc, U.S.A.’s
leading satellite television service provider, and TiVo Inc.-the creator of and
a leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVR) - announced
to extent the companies' agreement by five years to Feb. 15, 2015. They plan to
to produce a version of the TiVo service for DirecTV's broadband-enabled HD DVR
platform. The product is expected to be available in the second half of 2009.
The agreement puts TiVo in a position to turn a bigger
portion of DirecTV’s customers into TiVo subscribers, in a deal that TiVo says
will reap more in fees than previous agreements. The product will support the
latest TiVo and DIRECTV features and services, including TiVo’s Universal
Swivel Search and TiVo KidZone. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The new HD offering would be marketed and sold by DIRECTV
nationally to its entire customer base as part of its portfolio of brand name
video offerings.
DirecTV and TiVo began working together in 2000 when DirecTV
first offered DVRs with TiVo service to its customers. In April 2006, the
companies announced an extension of their commercial and advertising
relationship.
DIRECTV subscribers enjoy access to over 265 channels of
100% digital picture and sound, exclusive programming, advanced technologies
such as DVR and HD-DVR services and the most state-of-the-art interactive
sports packages available anywhere.
On the other hand, TiVo’s DVR is functional and easy to use,
with such features as Season Pass(R) recordings, WishList(R) searches, and TiVo
KidZone that have elevated its popularity among consumers and have created a
whole new way for viewers to watch television.
