Back in July, when TiVo quietly pulled their Series 3 DVRs
from stores, nobody knew it but it was just to make way for the next step in
the line: Enter the TiVo HD XL
While otherwise very similar to its predecessor, the
standard TiVo HD, the XL’s most distinguishing feature is its new, and hold on
to your breeches here, one Terabyte
hard disk! Now, the old HD model was already the largest capacity DVR on the
market – with 160 GB – but the HD XL is 6.4 times as much.
There is a 500GB
upgrade HDD for the HD but it still won’t reach the same size as the XL and
it’ll cost nearly as much: the XL costs around $600 that’s including a $399
lifetime service plan, while the old HD plus the upgrade will set you back
about $500.
If you feel that’s unconvincing there are a number of unique
features on the TiVo HD, as well as its XL counterpart, which you won’t find
for instance on free DVRs that come with your cable subscription: Watching
YouTube videos, the ability to rent and buy Amazon Unbox videos, Rhapsody
music, online scheduling, copying recordings to PCs or portable devices (dubbed
TiVo To Go), access to video and audio podcasts, and more.
The TiVo HD XL also complies with THX quality standards, and
supports resolutions of 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080.
Although it comes with a backlit HDMI cable that allows it
to be used with CableCard devices, the HD XL is designed to be usable with analog
cables and OTA HD programming, according to TiVo.
