A powerful thunderstorms system which also spawned some tornados hit Texas early Thursday, authorities said.
The numerous lightning and wind gusts of up to 80 mph left about 3,300 customers without power in the Dallas-Fort Worth region and almost 1,000 in the West Texas city of Breckenridge, according to Megan Wright, a spokeswoman for Oncor Electric Delivery.
The power wasn’t yet restored and is not clear how much it would take authorities to do that.
Several thunderstorms warning were issued throughout North Texas early Thursday, according to Tara Dudzyk, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.
After hitting Oklahoma, the storm system moved with a high speed across the state heading from west to east.
At lest five homes were wrecked by storms in Breckenridge, a town situated 125 miles west of Dallas. There were reports of minor injuries. Several poles were down and the city was almost entirely left without power, according to the Oncor Electric Delivery who surveyed the damages.
A small airport was damaged and KTVT, a Dallas-Fort Worth TV station, aired footage from the site. Reports also indicated that numerous outbuildings suffered heavy damage, but the fact that the damages were caused by a tornado wasn’t confirmed yet, said Jessica Schultz of the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.
Although there were several reports of tornadoes, the National Weather Service staff announced its planes to conduct a survey in the areas later Thursday so that it could confirm whether there actually were tornadoes in the area or not.
