Police in the Bahamas have arrested three people in connection with the alleged plot to extort money from actor John Travolta.
Two days ago, police announced an investigation into a $20 million extortion plot targeting John Travolta and Kelly Preston whose son Jett, 16, passed away in early January after suffering a seizure and hitting his head in the bathroom at his parents’ vacation home in the Bahamas.
According to the Associated Pres, an island lawmaker and a paramedic were taken into custody on suspicion of being involved in the scam. Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Marvin Dames said Senator Pleasant Bridgewater has been in custody since Thursday. Police have reportedly obtained some kind of recording of Bridgewater, but did not indicate what she says on tape.
A second suspect, ambulance driver Tarino Lightbourne, who was quoted by several tabloids describing efforts to revive Travolta's son, turned himself in on Friday accompanied by his lawyer.
The third person arrested was politician Obie Wilchcombe, who refused to voluntarily submit to an interrogation.
Since Jett's death, the family has only stated publicly that their son suffered from Kawasaki Syndrome, a chemically-induced childhood disorder that does not explain all of Jett’s symptoms. There was speculation that he was autistic, although that was never confirmed by the Travoltas.
The teenager's sudden death became controversial due to the fact that his parents are members of the Church of Scientology, which does not believe in psychiatric illness and strongly discourages followers from using any form of psychiatric drugs.
The Travoltas said they did treat Jett’s seizures with the drug Depakote, but that it simply stopped working for him after several years and he was taken off it under the guidance of a neurologist. It is highly unlikely it will ever be known whether Jett would have had the seizure that led to his death if he was on another drug.
