Three Hospital Employees Fired After Patient’s Death

Three employees at Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro were fired and others were disciplined in the death of 50-year-old Steven H. Sabock, of Roanoke Rapids, a bipolar disorder sufferer who passed away on April 29 after being neglected for more than 22 hours.

A security video from the day the death took place showed Sabock dying in a dayroom at Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro after he chocked on his medication and hit his head. The video also showed that nurses were not far away from Sabock while he was in need of help. Staff members from the medical facility were playing cards and watching television in the same room the patient was. One employee was kissing and hugging another one and seemed to be dancing. Investigators in this case said that, the day he passed away, the patient wasn’t given any food. What’s more, no hospital staff even checked on him.

According to officials from North Carolina, 10 other employees were disciplined. One of them got a five-day suspension, four others received three-day suspensions and the rest of them were given written warnings.

"It's very hard for me to watch, but of what I've seen, it's the most disgusting thing I can imagine," said Susan Sabock of Winchester, Va., who was married to Steven Sabock for 25 years. "It's like we're in a bad dream and we just can't get up. How is this hospital still open? I just don't understand."

In line with a press statement, two other employees voluntarily left employment with the hospital after the death of Sabock.
