The three Indonesian militants executed on Sunday for the 2002 Bali bombings were buried. The ceremony was attended by thousands of people and family members and the situation was tense as emotional.

Although a hard-line backlash was expected at the funerals, the ceremony went off quite smooth apart from some scuffles with police. At least one police officer was injured in Tenggulun.

The three Indonesian militants buried are members of the militant group Jemaah Islamiah. They were Imam Samudra, 38, Mukhlas, 48, and Amrozi, 46. They were shot by a firing squad on Nusakambangan island in central Java at 12:15 a.m., said Jasman Panjaitan, a spokesman for Indonesia's attorney-general.

The three Indonesian militants were found guilty killing 202 people, including 88 Australians and 38 Indonesians, in two explosions on October 12, 2002 in Bali's Kuta strip. The militants blew up two popular night clubs. More than 300 people were wounded. Most of them were tourists.

"People need to be vigilant and there's a possibility of someone responding to the appeal of the three dead men but I don't think people should believe that there will automatically be some active terrorism," Sidney Jones, a security expert from the Brussels-based International Crisis Group, said.

The bodies of the executed militants were flown by helicopter to their home towns: brothers Mukhlas and Amrozi to Tenggulun in East Java, and Samudra to Serang in West Java.

Numerous police personnel were deployed to make sure things don’t go mayhem. There were some clashes between the two sides as the crowd was trying to get too close to the bodies.
