Lately, some of the hit movies have had graphics similar to
video games. If you haven’t seen "300" (which you should!), just think of
Gollum in Lord of the Rings and you’ll understand the type of characters I’m
referring to.
Despite "300" already being akin to computer generated
graphics, its filmmaker Zack Snyder has decided to transform the box office hit
into an actual video game. It can’t be too hard for Snyder, considering what he
managed to do with the movie’s appearance. He signed a three-game deal with EA
Games, which will be produced in the video game giant’s Los Angeles Studio.
However Snyder didn’t just sign a deal – he will be leading the creative team
(hopefully not in the Spartan spirit). But before the games will be out in
stores, Snyder is not kicking back: he is working on the post-production of the
“Watchmen” adaptation, which will most likely be released in the spring of
2009. If the graphics will benefit from the same high quality as in "300" and in the remake of “Dawn of the Dead”, we can expect another blockbuster. And who
knows, perhaps even new game deals.
Snyder is not the first and will surely not be the last
director to strike such a deal with a game design company. In 2005 alone,
Steven Spielberg signed a contract with EA Games, while Peter Jackson shook
hands with the Microsoft Game Studios in 2006, also on a three-game deal. EA
representatives have also casually let slip that the deal Snyder made also
entails translating the games into film, later on.
This is a step in a more classical direction, as lately Hollywood has been making
movie adaptations of games, instead of the other way around. Think of Resident
Evil, Tomb Raider and the latest Max Payne, which will star Mark Wahlberg.
