Both “Marley and Me” and “Curious Case of Benjamin Button” have reasons to celebrate as both films debuted on top of the box-office this Christmas. Coming on top, 'Marley and Me', co-starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, a film about a young family and their mischievous dog ($14.8 million), closely followed by Pitt's 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' ($11.8 million), with Cate Blanchett were the absolute winners of the holidays.
The former couple both had movies in competition for the top spot on Christmas Day, and while Aniston's film pulled in the most money, both movies were winners at the box office. Actually both films exceeded box office expectations by 40-50 percent, Variety reports.
In third place was Disney's family film “Bedtime Stories,” with Adam Sandler, which earned $10.5-million. Tom Cruise's Nazi thriller “Valkyrie” generated an estimated $8.5 milion. It tells the story of the actual assassination plot against Adolf Hitler, an interesting story with rather bad critics.
Among this week's most popular film, “Yes Man,” starring Jim Carrey, was in fifth place, according to early indications, with $6milion.
Rounding out the top tier are Will Smith's "Seven Pounds" on the 6th place with $4.8 million, "The Spirit" at Number 7 with $3.8 million, "The Day the Earth Stood Still" at Number 8 with $2.7 million, "Four Christmases" at Number 9 with $2.3 million and "The Tale of Despereaux" at Number 10 with $2 million.
As far as disappointments are concerned, “The Spirit,” starring Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson was the only underperformer of the holiday season. A graphic adaptation of Frank Miller's novel, 'The Spirit' in spite of Johansson, only managed end up on the seventh place.
