Third Suspect Arrested In Bhutto’s Assassination Case

Another suspect has been arrested in connection with former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, Pakistani police investigators announced. Two other suspects have been arrested last week, both believed to have been involved in Bhutto’s attack, and held for interrogations.

A senior police investigator confirmed the third suspect’s arrest, but refused to give any details about him, besides his name:  Abdul Rashid. According to a local TV station quoted by Reuters, the suspect is believed to have provided the attackers with arms and ammunition.

The two other suspects arrested last week, and whose full identities have only been made public recently, allegedly confessed to helping the suicide bomber. They were part of a five-man team, including the suicide bomber.

The investigation regarding Benazir Bhutto’s assassination has been a controversial one, with intelligence officials blaming Baitullah Mehsud, al-Qaeda militant leader, for masterminding the attack, but at the same time, a controversial letter of Bhutto herself appeared to have pointed to a possible attack commanded by the government.

It remains unclear whether the arrests were just a way of taking the attention off a possible government involvement in the incident, days before the general elections. Most of Bhutto’s supporters doubt that the detained suspects had no government help in their actions.

According to an investigation by Scotland Yard, ex-Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was killed by a severe injury due to the bomb blast that violently slammed her head into a vehicle. The report torn down previous beliefs that she had been killed by gunfire.

Bhutto’s family and supporters however refused to accept the conclusions of the Scotland Yard investigation, claiming they had been limited in their investigation. Unfortunately, the family also refused an autopsy to be made, which would have given a more accurate cause of death than mere assumptions.
