A third person was arrested and is now in the Berkeley police custody in connection with the alleged abuse of a 17-year-old. The terrified and nearly naked teen showed up at a gym with a chain locked to his ankle. The teen said he had just escaped after being held captive.
A couple – a Girl Scout leader and her husband – was already arrested in connection with the abuse. The boy reportedly showed up at the In-Shape Sports Club in Tracy (about 70 miles south of Sacramento) on Monday wearing only boxer briefs and covered in soot.
The boy asked to be hidden because he thought someone was after him.
"He said, 'Don't let them get me, don't let them get me,'" gym manager Chuck Ellis said.
"He was totally terrified."
The main suspects are Kelly Layne Lau, 30, and Michael Schumacher, 34. They were arrested on Monday after being questioned by police investigators. Evidence of their involvement in the abuse was found at their home. They are being held at the San Joaquin County jail in lieu of bail of nearly $1.2 million each.
The third person arrested in connection with the abuse was 43-year-old Caren Ramirez, probably the boy’ aunt. She had been named the boy’s guardian after child protective services took him from his father about four years ago. The boy ran away from a Sacramento foster home last year, according to local authorities.
The current hypothesis is that the boy had been chained to a car seat, but fortunately managed to pick up a dropped key and unlock himself to flee when the car stopped.
