ABC’s dramedy “Ugly Betty” starring America Ferrera no longer fits the network’s new prime-time lineup description and will be shelved temporarily making room for “Samantha Who?”
In a surprise announcement made yesterday, ABC said they’re going to replace “Ugly Betty,” which has been registering declining audiences, with “Samantha Who?” and “In The Motherhood” starting March 26th. Both comedies will finish their runs before “Ugly Betty” returns probably sometime in June, if ever.
”In the Motherhood” is a new comedy starring Megan Mullally, Cheryl Hines and Horatio Sanz which tells about three women who represent mothers we all know. "Motherhood" story lines will be inspired by the experiences of actual moms who can share their stories on the network’s website. A series of short episodes already gained popularity airing online. 13 episodes are in order.
A spokesperson for ABC reassured fans that the change is only temporarily, and that “Ugly Betty” will be back in the same timeslot, “ABC has complete confidence in Ugly Betty and the hiatus is no way meant to reflect a loss in faith for the show which remains large part of ABC's identity.”
The new ”Ugly Betty” season premiered last year to a an 8 million audience but then consistently lost around one million viewers each week, sinking as low as 3.6 million. This month, however, it managed to regain popularity, rising back up to 7.5 million, but - with audience figures for last year reaching 9 million - that wasn't enough to save it.
