Teens may sigh, but producers believe it’s the right thing
to do. After 10 years of “Total Request Live” and girlish screams, MTV decided
to shut down its flagship show.
All good or bad things eventually come to an end and
14-year-olds will be forced to find another way to watch their favorite videos
and artists.
However, fans will benefit from a two-hour special sometime
in November, The Associated Press cited Dave Sirulnick as saying. The ending
episode is said to be full of surprises, bringing together all the stars who
were symbols of “TRL” at some point or, to be more accurate, whose symbol was
“TRL,” as the long-running show promoted now-renowned celebrities such as the
N’Sync guys or the once controversial white rapper Eminem.
Dave Sirulnick highlighted nevertheless that “TRL” was not
leaving for good, but that it definitely had to take a break. No wonder.
Nothing (and no one) could live a nutty teenage life for so long.
“We want to close this era of ‘TRL’ in a big celebratory
way, and 10 is a great number,” Dave Sirulnick said, according to the AP. “And
10 is the number that ‘TRL’ counted down every single day for 10 years, and we
hit this 10th (anniversary) and we thought, ‘You know what? This feels like the
right time and let’s celebrate it and let’s reward it. And let’s let it have a
little bit of a rest for a minute.’ Let it catch its breath! Been working hard
— for 10 years!”
“TRL” debuted in September 1998 and instantly grew to be the
flashy nucleus of the teen pop music picture, promoting in style stars such as
teen icon Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, N’Sync and Eminem. Moreover,
from its very first days and up to present, the show has been the ideal scene
where musicians, actors and other celebrities praised their own works.
Dave Sirulnick said that the grand finale may consist of
special appearances from the “folks who helped make ‘TRL’ what it is — whether
that’s Justin (Timberlake) and his guys in N’Sync, the Backstreet Boys,
Britney, Eminem — I think we would love to see all of them here.” Carson Daly
should not be missing this end of an MTV era, as he has been the most
well-liked “TRL” host out there.
So, let the show begin… or end!
