The report about the seventeen pregnant teenage girls
managed to become big-time news once Mr. Joseph Sullivan, Gloucester High
School’s principal, expressed his belief that this might not be a coincidence
and that eight of the girls might have made some sort of pact to get pregnant and
raise their babies together.
An explanation for the events had to be given, taking into
consideration that the number of pregnant girls is more than four times bigger
than last year’s. Unfortunately, this might have been the worse one of the
available solutions, as the media quickly jumped on the issue and demanded some
more explanations.
Carolyn Kirk, the city’s mayor, was the one that had to face
the reporters and explained that there is no additional information to back up
Mr. Sullivan’s claim. She said that the principal was the only one who referred
to a pact as the reason for the pregnancy situation and because no one else
stated a similar position, the information cannot be considered reliable.
The mayor scheduled a meeting for today with the local
officials in order to discuss the alarming rates of teenage pregnancies and
start working on a strategy for significantly lowering the numbers.
The girls are all 16 and younger and many believe that this
is a direct result of the poor sexual education programs in schools, the movies
presenting the pregnancy experience as beautiful and romantic, with no
downsides and also the media with their massive constant coverage of celebrity
pregnancies, all the press attention and discussions presenting it as
‘must-have’ experience.
