Twitter, the micro bloggig site that has exploded recently in terms of popularity and still has much to grow, was hit by four separate worm attacks over the past weekend. The attacks caused thousands of Twitter accounts to be infected and become source of infection for others.
The worm was unleashed into the micro blogging Web site through four accounts opened on Twitter. These accounts started spreading the worm on Saturday morning, said Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. Mr. Stone said Twitter’s security team was prompted to take care of the problem which by 11 a.m. had grown to about 90 infected accounts.
The second attack came on Saturday afternoon and it was “much more intense,” as Biz Stone described it. The number of infected accounts grew to about 100 by then.
The third attack occurred on Sunday and the fourth came on Monday morning. Fortunately, the worm did not steal account passwords, phone numbers or other personal information as a typical malware worm does.
The man, better said boy, behind the attacks was Brooklyn teenager Michael Mooney. The 17-year-old teen created SalkDaily and confessed in an interview with BNONews.com that he created the virus worm and unleashed it into Twitter. When asked why he did it, Mooney said that he was bored and had nothing better to do.
He did say however, that he was sorry for what he has done and that he was conscious that he could end up in jail for the trouble he caused. Mooney told interviewers that he started developing worms three years ago and that this one was his last. The teen said he hopes he’ll get a job as a security analyst.
