The Williames, Rafael Nadal and Justine Henin showed why they are favorites at this tournament as Wednesday they all advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open. And in a late match, top seed Roger Federer joined them.
Venus had six double-faults and twenty unforced errors, but managed to oust Romania’s Ioana Raluca Olaru, 6-4, 6-2. The Wilmbledon winner recorded a 124mph serve and only one ace in the second round match.
"I want to be the last one standing with a plate over my head," she said after the match said.
Sister Serena beat Italy’s Maria Elena Camerin, 7-5, 6-2, in another second-round match, to record her eight win of the last ten matches.
World’s No.1 Justin Henin also advanced in the next stage of the tournament by beating Tsvetana Pironkova in straight sets 6-4, 6-0.
Wimbledon runner up Rafael Nadal faced a tough opponent. A 27-year-old wild card who was making his debut at the US Open, Australian Alun Jones, took Nadal’s first six points of the match as the Spaniard was struggling with a inflamed left knee tendon.
However, he scampered out of trouble, winning, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, in the second round in 2 hours 45 minutes.
"I didn't run too much, no? I can't move too much," Nadal said. "Difficult to play like this, especially here."
And last but never least, Roger Federer had no trouble against Paul Capdeville and won in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-4. The Swiss is aiming to become the first man since the 1920s to claim four consecutive U.S. championships.
