English rock band The Who has been honored at a special concert by several bands. The legendary band which formed in 1964 was celebrated on Saturday at the third annual "VH1 Rock Honors," which will be broadcasted Thursday on the cable channel.
The charity event held on the University of California-Los Angeles campus honored the British rockers with appearances of bands such as The Flaming Lips and Pearl Jam, VH1 noted in a news release Sunday.
"VH1 Rock Honors: The Who" raised more than $1 million for several charities such as the Teenage Cancer Trust and The VH1 Save the Music Foundation.
Celebrities such as Rainn Wilson, David Duchovny and comedian Adam Sandler attended were present and paid individual tribute to the legendary British rock band.
Pete Townshend, The Who’s founding guitarist, and singer Roger Daltry performed classics such as "My Generation," "Who Are You" and "Teenage Wasteland." The band’s original drummer died in London in 1978 and founding bassist John Entwistle died in Las Vegas in 2002.
The list of bands which came to honor The Who also included Pearl Jam, The Foo Fighters, Incubus, The Flaming Lips and Tenacious D.
"It's an honor to honor what I consider to be the greatest band of all time. Wanna know why they were the greatest? Because they were the first ones to really rock hard," Tenacious D frontman Jack Black told the crowd.
The show was closed with a performance of Pete Townshend and lead singer Roger Daltrey who sang some of the band's greatest hits.
