The final preparations for the holiday season seem to have occupied video game makers’ time. They must ensure that they’re ready to deliver games and consoles for the holiday season and that’s because it’s the most important season of them all, which usually brings developers and manufacturers a lot of money.
The large companies, such as Nintendo or Sony, will introduce new devices or games. Nintendo will ship two limited edition Nintendo DS bundles today, which will include a Mario Red Nintendo DS with the “New Super Mario Bros.” game and an Ice Blue Nintendo DS with a matching carrying case and a copy of “Brain Age.”
Furthermore, the Japanese manufacturer will try to gain new subscribers by releasing its next generation portable, Nintendo DSi, a device that has two cameras, advanced music capabilities and a big screen.
As for Sony, one of Nintendo’s rivals, it will launch a new portable game, the PSP 3000, which adds a high-resolution screen and a built-in microphone to let users call whoever they want between games or movies. Microsoft also released a totally overhauled OS for its Xbox 360 video game console, which includes a slick makeover of the graphical user interface and new features, such as the one to stream movies from Netflix. In this video game industry, there are also newcomers who will try to make the best out of this holiday season.
They are Apple’s iPhone 3G and iPod Touch, which have become popular gaming devices for vacationers. As previously mentioned, it’s a jackpot for video game makers, because everyone wants to receive something “playable” for Christmas.
Recent data from the marketing research NPD reports that game software sales and hardware sales have registered an important increase. The bestseller, however, is Nintendo’s Wii, which has sold 13.4 million units since its launch in 2006. The number one video game of the previous month was “Fable II”, with 790,000 copies shipped.
