“The Unborn”

Directed by David S. Gover and produced by Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes, “The Unborn” is a supernatural horror-thriller movie which was released in early 2009. Gary Oldman interprets a spiritual advisor for Odette Yustman, who is disturbed by a dybbuk.

The dybbuk is a demon, a malevolent spirit, who transfers into the body of a person and refuses to leave the real world. The demon possesses the body of a living person and directs his conduct. This kind of spirit can only be made to leave through a religious ceremony.

In the movie, the dybbuk seeks the young’s girl death to use it as a gateway to a physical existence. The young girl, Casey Beldon, is haunted by evil dreams, visions of strange looking dogs and an evil child with bright blue eyes. At a moment, Casey is hit with a mirror by the son of her neighbors and the color of her eyes starts to change. During this state, she finds out that she had had a twin brother who had died in the womb.

Casey suspects the evil spirit who haunts her as being her dead twin brother, who wants to be born, but she meets Sofi, her grandmother who explains her that her twin brother had been killed in Nazi experiments in Auschwitz during the times they were both children.

So the little boy was revived by a dybbuk that searched for a body which he would use as a portal to enter in the world of the living. Sofi murdered the twin as to stop the dybbuk, but now it haunts her family to look for revenge. So she recommends Rabbi Sendak to Casey, saying that he can perform a Jewish exorcism to remove the dybbuk. But the Rabbi can’t take his ritual to an end because the demon tries to stop him. Yet, the spirit disappears after the exorcism and the death of Casey's boyfriend. Soon afterwards, Casey finds out that she is pregnant with twins.

The movie designs an interesting story, but no so scary as it seems. One of the big scandals connected to “The Unborn” was linked to the poster, which shows Yustman in her underwear. In the United States, the movie is rated PG-13 due to its horror violence and disturbing images.

“The Unborn” offers a horror jump into the life of the undead. Casey hates her mother because she had abandoned her when she was a little child, but as things go on, she gets to understand her mother’s reasons. The young girl gets help from Romy, played by Meagan Good, and her boyfriend, Mark, interpreted by Cam Gigandet, as to discover the source of her family’s curse.

Yet, “The Unborn” mixes the fantastic elements and brings the sacred things into the real world. The story is special and interesting, but we’ll have to wait for its release throughout the world as to see how this story has been put into motion.
