The Ultimate “Twilight” Hysteria

Film stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart of the monster phenomenon known as "Twilight" are still astonished by their new found fame, as fans have been lining up and camping out in anticipation for the film’s premiere tomorrow night, November 21st.

Actually author Stephenie Meyer's series of books has replaced Harry Potter as the series to read for teenagers. It is the story of Isabella Swan, who moves to gloomy Forks to live with her father. As she starts her junior year in high school she becomes fascinated by Edward Cullen who holds a dark secret: he is a vampire. But Edward falls in love with Bella as well knowing that the further they progress in their relationship the more he is putting Bella and those close to her at risk. The thrill begins when a new vampire finds it a challenge to hunt Bella down for her irresistible blood. And it’s only up to Edward to save the love of his life.

And this morning Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart appeared on “The Today Show.” The NBC Studios at Rockefeller Center in New York City were ringed by screaming and crying fans. "It's just amusing now," Pattinson told Meredith Vieira on “The Today Show” this morning of playing Edward Cullen. "People just project their idea of the character onto me, and assume I'm the same, when I'm just really not. It makes my life very easy." But Robert's co-star Kristen Stewart says it is his imperfectness that made him exactly right to play the "ideal man."

Catherine Hardwicke, who also directed the teen outsider films “Thirteen,” “Lords of Dogtown” and “The Nativity Story,” filled the movie with rock music and slow-motion fashion displays and focused less on the inner variations of the characters. That’s why the book is better from this point of view. The characters in the movie are too general, I think. They might belong to other periods of time, or live somewhere else or have any other reason for their love not to go on smoothly. Their specific teenage confusion was handled with too little sense of measure and depth. However their native still unpolished behavior and naivety makes them charming and interesting and very believable for the general public.

"Twilight" was filmed with a small budget, which may have been a real advantage for the whole atmosphere of the film. Purists of the book series will be happy to see that the first line of Meyer's book, "I'd never given much thought to how I would die", is also the first line in Melissa Rosenberg's script. Several other choice bits of dialogue have been plucked, and except for a couple of details that were moved around here and there.

But the most amazing thing is that 24 hours before the film opened, some 2,000 shows were already sold out, many of them midnight Thursday night screenings. And in a survey Fandango conducted of early ticket buyers, 85% said they plan to see Twilight more than once. It wouldn't be the first time young women paid to see a movie over and over again. Remember “Titanic?”
