The Leader of the United Kingdom Liberal Democrat Party,
Menzies Campbell, has resigned on Monday. The resign has a immediate effect, the
head leaders announced, quoted by AFP.
The second man in the party, Vince Cable, previously said
that Campbell’s
position in the party was questionable. Cable will occupy Campbell’s position until the election of a
new leader.
Menzies Campbell, 66, insisted until now that he would keep
his role as a leader of the party until the next elections, which will take
place up to May 2010, despite the critics regarding his age, his performance
and the fact that the party decreasing popularity.
The Liberal Democrat Party is the third political force in
the British Parliament. Its officials declared that they will announce a a
timetable for electing a new leader On Tuesday, but the struggle seems to be
between law-and-order spokesman Nick Clegg and environment spokesman Chris
Huhne.
